Anna-Marie Babington grew up in Mobile, Alabama and earned a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in Visual Studies. Working primarily in oil, watercolor, and ink, Anna-Marie paints to express feelings, concepts, and relationships that cannot be captured with precise language or the click of a camera. Her work centers on themes of perception, identity, mind-body connection, and experience of the physical world. As a yoga teacher and practitioner, a deep curiosity with embodied consciousness manifests in her work, and an accompanying fascination with ancient spiritual systems contributes to the mysterious presence felt in her paintings. While her oil paintings feature layers of symbols, mantra, and faces hidden to the casual observer, sparse strokes, stemming from Japanese ink painting techniques and minimal aesthetics, define her works on paper. Painting provides a space for endless inquiry—a means to ask questions, explore, and experiment. Leaving spaces intentionally unfinished, Anna-Marie invites the viewer to join the dance between attention, inquiry, and imagination.
Anna-Marie is also a Kripalu-trained yoga teacher with experience in Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Vipassana, and Mindfulness Meditation.
